The Maze Runner Review

So I watched The Maze Runner

I was definitely delaying going to watch this movie. The thought of yet another movie based on a book about a dystopian future where teenagers are the focus actually made me cringe. Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoy this genre but feel like it’s saturating the market. I need some variety!

But anyway, back to The Maze Runner, basic plot: a bunch of teenage boys live in a field surrounded by a giant stone maze. Every month a box rises from the centre of the field, carrying supplies and a new person to join the clan. Everything changes when Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) comes up the box. Blah blah blah

So the movie kinda feels like Hunger Games in a maze. I mean this as a compliment rather than an insult. The movie’s best feature is the cast of actors. I’ve been let down by young actors over the last few years but everyone in this movie brings it. Not every character has a ton of screen time but the actors definitely make the most of it.

The script is nothing amazing, the dialgoue is everything you’d expect in a movie like this but it’ll keep you entertained.

This movie is based on a series of books and I haven’t read any of these books so I don’t know how many unanswered questions the book left but this movie leaves tons. With movies like this, sequels are a given and the movie just feels like it needs to be completed by another movie. Can’t really hold this against the movie cause if that’s what the book did, it should stay true to the source material.

Overall, I actually enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected. It has mystery, a few thrills and some genuinely impressive acting from some very young and talented actors. If you liked Hunger Games, Divergent or The Giver you’ll probably like this. It’s worth a trip to the cinema, 7/10.

    1. Thanks for the comment. Hollywood isn’t big on originality at the moment but I don’t mind it too much when they make the movie this entertaining.
